Daisy Mae was 8 ounces at birth and color-coded ‘Orange’. She was the smallest of the 7 in the Fire House Litter of Weimaraner puppies, and nicknamed ‘Orange Peel’. Orange Peel was feisty from the get-go and always scrambled from the bottom of the ‘Puppy Pile’ back to the top. And she sent her brothers (Blue Boy/Edge and Green Bean/Chief) flying when they tried to mess with her!
The adoption match for Orange Peel to her ‘forever home’ with Sandy Sue was perfect since her Baby Girl was to be an ‘only child’ and Sandy was newly retired!! Everyone knew that Orange Peel was going to be a handful and require lots of attention and supervision 24/7.
Sandy named her new puppy Daisy Mae, and she was registered with the AKC as Rockville’s Orange Flame. Daisy is almost 16 months, and she has earned titles for JH (Junior Hunt at 9 mos), CGC (Canine Good Citizen at 7 mos), NSD (Novice Shooting Dog), and received a Judges’ Award of Merit at her first Field Trial.
Daisy Mae is very ‘birdy’ and runs like ‘greased lightning’ so she will work on her Senior Hunt Title this year. She goes to Rally and Obedience classes every week, and her mom wants to try to work Agility and Tracking into their schedule. Her ‘bird nose’ conflicts with the outdoor trials for Rally and Obedience, so if they had a special award for tracking ‘goose poop’ she would definitely be in the running to win that trophy! Daisy Mae will definitely be in Obedience classes for the rest of her life . . . but she loves Loretta at the Mt Diablo Dog Training Club.
Daisy Mae is also very social and way too smart. She goes to Doggie Day Care once or twice a week with 20-30 dogs, plays all day, teaches the new dogs and the old dogs ‘Puppy Play’, and is very gentle on walks thru the park when the babies and toddlers want to pet her. At the dog parks, she introduces herself to all the moms and dads before she gets into serious play time with the other puppies. Daisy Mae is active all day, is the Energized Weimaraner after a 5 minute nap, and wants to be your constant companion, so she can be a calculating and sneaky Terrorist-In-Training when she wants attention or needs to cover her tracks!
It is amazing to see the versatility of the Weimaraners and how one puppy can separate the activities: birdy and business in the field, concentrated but stubborn in class/training, social in public with people and dogs, and dedicated and loving at home!
